We left Cinque Terre and our next destination was Siena, which is in Tuscany. On the way, we stopped in Pisa to check out the leaning tower, walk around, and have lunch.
We had one train ride from our Cinque Terre village of Monterosso to Pisa. Then we rented lockers for a few hours at stowyourbags.com, which worked out pretty well but was a little further from the train station that we would have loved.
We walked about 20 minutes to the plaza that contains the leaning tower.
Now, I personally wasn't expecting to be that impressed by the tower. We have all seen photos of it. The people that I know who have gone didn't seem particularly thrilled by it. And perhaps going in with low expectations was the ticket, because we thought it was pretty cool. And I have a new appreciation for people who can get good photos of the lean of the tower, or for people who can get good creative photos like the chess piece knocking over the tower. Most of our attempts to lean into the tower or hold it up were cheesy and comical. And I found it quite funny to look around and see every other tourist trying to line up these types of photos...
What was cool to me was the whole plaza. The other structures in the plaza are also all remarkable. There's a cool museum and a huge beautiful church that we enjoyed going inside. Then we found a cafe and had lunch before heading back to our bags and the train.
From there, we had one train to the Siena train station and then a city bus into the old center where we found our AirBnb. More on Siena next! But overall, I'd say it was totally worth it to check out the leaning tower of Pisa and it really is a cool attraction.
