Jungfraujoch

During our time in Wengen, Switzerland, we kept a close eye on the weather forecast.  As soon as there was promise of a clear day, we bought our (expensive) train tickets to Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in Europe.

View at Eismeer (10,368ft)

One train took us from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, and from there the train takes you up past Eigergletscher (7,612 ft) through a tunnel in the mountain.  The 9km tunnel took 3000m 16 years to drill and was opened in 1912.  Along the way, you can get out briefly at viewing points to peek at the glacial snow.

At the top, you can get out and enjoy the souvenir shop and cafe, an ice palace to walk around in, the amazing views from a snowy plateau, or you can catch an elevator to a higher viewing platform.  Around you, you can see the Aletsch glacier, Eiger and Monk.

It was amazing.  It was expensive and touristy and crowded, but so beautiful.  For me, this was probably the highlight of our trip.
