Naxos, Greece

Rachel wrote our last post about our magical time in Santorini, and then we went to Naxos.

There are many similarities between island hopping in Greece and island hopping the Gulf Islands near our home in BC.

Our ferry from Santorini to Naxos went smoothly enough. It takes about 2 hours on the ferry. We found a good spot to sit and enjoy ourselves, grabbed a burger each from the burger shop on the boat, and arrived at the port at dusk. We decided to rent a car while on the island of Naxos because we weren't staying right in town and getting around in the off season seemed tricky.

Arriving in Naxos

We drove to our Air Bnb in the little community of Agia Anna, which is about a 15-20 min drive south of the main town on Naxos and were graciously welcomed by the host. Our little 2 bdm house was beautiful and right across the street from the beach. This was one of the best air bnbs we have ever stayed at. The hosts were lovely and welcomed us with a basket of fruit and a sample of the local liqueur called "Kitron", which is delicious and like a lemoncello.

We woke up in the morning, delighted with the beach view and our adorable place. There was NOBODY around and nothing was open. The off season here meant things were shut down for the winter. We were pretty happy to have all of the beach and area to ourselves. We did have to drive into town to one of the only markets open and get whatever groceries we could for meals.

Jason, Susan and Rachel went for a drive into the middle of the island to explore some.

There are stray cats everywhere in Greece, and people make them homes outside and feed them

It was pleasant outside, and when it was sunny and not to windy, just warm enough for a quick dip in the sea. (Also there was a hot shower right across the street in our place.)

We checked out of our place and explored some of the island, as our ferry didn't leave until the evening. We hiked above this town of Apollanos and enjoyed the views.

We really enjoyed this island. Sadly, we could only spend 2 nights on the island of Naxos because of how the ferries lined up.
More about the ferries and the next islands to come...
