Waterfalls road trip part 1: Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina

We rented a car in Sarajevo and went on a road trip to (North) Western Bosnia. Our first stop was Jajce, a town of 30,000 people that is about a 3 hour drive from Sarajevo, and we spent two nights there.

Some of our highways were beautiful new toll roads with gorgeous pavement. Some roads became smaller and snowy up high and we were grateful that it wasn't actively snowing but clear with good visibility and not many cars. Things got exciting when a dog ran right along side our car for several minutes in the deeper snow - we are so glad we didn't hurt it!

We saw a few factories on the way

Lunch for 4 at a bakery for about $5

Not sure why the entrance to this grocery store was a lion?!?

We had lots of space in this apartment to spread out

One awesome thing was the grocery store in town - for whatever reason it was pretty big and offered some items we hadn't been able to find in a while: broccoli, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, a can of beans... we were pretty excited to eat a salad!

We walked into town and saw the big attraction: the river runs through town, right under the old city walls and fortress, and then falls into a large waterfall! It's beautiful. Plus there were icicles all over the viewing area and chunks of ice and snow mixed into the falls.

We walked around the old town a little bit, and it was cute. Most things were closed as it was Sunday evening in the off season.

The next day we drove less than 10 minutes to Pliva lake, where we saw many cool little cascading waterfalls all around the river area. The most interesting thing here are the old mills. There are about 25 little old wooden mill buildings that have been there since the 1500s, and the water cascades down and all around them. You can walk on boardwalks to explore all around and see the old wheels and pipes. We also had a lot of fun watching the ducks that seem to have fun playing in the currents here. Then we discovered a little mini adventure course and had to try it out.

Just down from the mills, there's a wooden bridge and picnic area you can explore. It has another set of cascades and in the summer this whole area must just be a dream lake to swim and paddle.

Ava made a blanket fort while Mom was working.

We enjoyed this cute little place and would recommend going if you're ever in Bosnia and Herzegovenia.

Next stop: Una National Park and Bihac, Bosnia. That's just about as far West as you can get in the country before Croatia.
